Dr. Myriam Torres is the Director of the Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health. Dr. Torres researches health issues such as childhood obesity, maternal health, and HIV/AIDS prevention as they relate to Hispanic/Latino populations. She also studies the role that English proficiency has on preventive health services and changes that could be made to health policy to better serve Latino and immigrant communities. She currently serves on a variety of boards, including the SC State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the Diabetes Advisory Council of South Carolina, the Advisory Board of the PASOs Program, South Carolina for Healthy Families, MABEC, and the Hispanic Advisory Committee for the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs. Dr. Torres received her Enfermera (1981) from the Universidad Javeriana in Colombia, her MPH (1987) from the Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia, her MSPH (1991) and her Ph.D. (2001) in Epidemiology from the University of South Carolina.
