On April 5-6, 2024, the University of South Carolina’s Rule of Law Collaborative (ROLC) Deputy Executive Director, Steven Austermiller, conducted ROLC’s first in-person training session for the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. This training marks a significant step in strengthening the country’s legal capacity in alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

The Bar Association is launching a series of training programs for its members to enhance their skills in ADR, a crucial tool for expediting case resolution and reducing court backlogs. As part of this initiative, Mr. Austermiller developed an ADR training manual, an ADR Guide, and a set of PowerPoint presentations to serve as foundational resources for legal practitioners.

During the April training event, Mr. Austermiller presented these materials and conducted a Training of Trainers (ToT) session, equipping local Bar trainers with the necessary skills to deliver ADR training across Sri Lanka independently. This approach will ensure the program’s long-term sustainability and expand access to high-quality ADR education.

This initiative, funded by USAID in partnership with Chemonics International, aligns with broader efforts to enhance judicial efficiency in Sri Lanka. By equipping legal professionals with effective dispute resolution skills, the program contributes to a more predictable and efficient legal environment, supporting economic stability and fostering confidence among domestic and international investors.
